INTERVIEWING SURVIVORS & WITNESSES TO TRAUMA

The Reuters Handbook of Journalism cautions reporters who are interviewing people who have suffered physically or emotionally to avoid adding to their distress. Reuters journalists need to identify themselves as journalists and are clear and open about their intentions. Sources have no obligation to talk to journalists, Reuters journalists should make sure there is no suggestion of coercion in their overtures or that individuals are cooperating under duress.
